For all the promises of God in him (JESUS) are yea and in him Amen, unto the glory of God by us.
2 Corinthians 1:20 KJV
I have to confess that I have done a poor job of availing myself of all the promises of God available to us in Christ Jesus. Far too often I have reacted and responded to events and issues with my fallen, sinful humanity. It has at times cost me dearly.
Yet I know that when I do seek the Lords will and ways, blessings come. I am not referring primarily to material blessings, they are temporal and as a member of my church is fond of pointing out, there are no u-hauls at a cemetery. I am referring to eternal, spiritual blessings with Christ himself being our best blessing!! That is what we take into eternity. Nothing more, nothing less.
Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
-Matthew 6:19-21 KJV
What or who do you treasure? Your spouse, kids, home, car, boat, job, hobbies etc.? This is who is who owns your heart.
Yet Jesus commands us to seek first Gods kingdom. We should not have divided loyalties. God and his kingdom first, our spouse, then kids and other family members and then our jobs and lastly all else. That is the proper biblical order for priorities. If we place God first in all things, then he will bless all the other relationships as needed.
This is not to say that we will live a life free from troubles. In fact, one of the promises of Jesus is that we will have tribulation in our lives. We all will experience the loss of jobs, family, and friends, health troubles, discouragement etc. BUT in the midst of all these life experiences, Jesus will be there, never leaving or forsaking his own. That is our greatest blessing, Jesus here now and in eternity.
Come, Thou Fount of every blessing,
tune my heart to sing thy grace;
streams of mercy, never ceasing,
call for songs of loudest praise.
Teach me some melodious sonnet,
sung by flaming tongues above.
Praise the mount I’m fixed upon it
mount of God’s redeeming love.
