“And he arose and came to his father. But when he was still a great way off, his father saw him and had compassion, and ran and fell on his neck and kissed him.
-Luke 15:20 (NKJV)
The story of the prodigal’s son is my favorite. It is because I relate so much to the wayward son and his wasted life. In my early days, I wandered far from God, hurting others and myself with my selfish, sinful actions. Then, in 1979, I had an encounter with God in his word and was drawn into his kingdom through the power of his Holy Spirit luring me to Christ’s forgiveness, mercy, and grace.
Do you feel far from God? Has your relationship with him grown cool or even cold? Or do you even know him at all? Have you drifted into sin? Know that he cares for you and even though you may be a great way off, he still sees you and is waiting for you to turn to him. When you do, he comes to you quickly with great compassion and will take you into his arms and welcome you home. Don’t delay, your heavenly father awaits you.
Softly and tenderly Jesus is calling—
Calling for you and for me;
Patiently Jesus is waiting and watching—
Watching for you and for me!
Come home! come home!
Ye who are weary, come home!
Earnestly, tenderly, Jesus is calling,
Calling, O sinner, come home!
Why should we tarry when Jesus is pleading—
Pleading for you and for me?
Why should we linger and heed not His mercies—
Mercies for you and for me?
Time is now fleeting, the moments are passing—
Passing from you and from me;
Shadows are gathering, deathbeds are coming—
Coming for you and for me!
Oh, for the wonderful love He has promised—
Promised for you and for me!
Though we have sinned, He has mercy and pardon—
Pardon for you and for me!
In Jesus name.
